Making "Pop-Up"
Part of the problem was me. My overarching goal was to produce something that would seem "impossible." I wanted people to open up the card and think "there is no way that something this elaborate could possibly fit in this small package." And the pop-up words, even with silhouettes of Benjamin and Jeremy as in the first example on the previous page, just weren't cutting it.
Also, I still had no idea what could possibly go on the outside of the card to tie the whole thing together.
But then I had a flash of inspiration. What if I took a photo of Benjamin and Jeremy in front of something banal, then had the inside of the card reprise that, with pop-up versions of the boys in front of some elaborate New Year's theme? LovePop had previously done an interlocking snowflake design, which I really loved, and I asked whether it could be reworked into something with New Year's elements. LovePop was working with a local organization called The Possible Project, which was helping with my design, and they thought this sounded really interesting. They also had an idea for how to do the popups of Benjamin and Jeremy in such a way as to preserve details of their features rather than just being silhouettes.
